This clinic is ideal for novice riders who want to learn to rope or improve their existing roping skills. Beginning with horsemanship instruction and ground rope work, the week is designed to help people improve their horsemanship in ways that will allow them to rope in all different situations. From the corrals, the days will progress to riding out on the range and applying learned roping skills to real ranch work. The syle of roping that we practice is big loop and low-stress handling and takes into consideration horsemanship, stockmanship and roping.

If you attended last years clinic, this would be the week for you to test your skills. You are welcome to bring your own horse or use one of the ranch horses. Call to hear about our discounted rate structure. For more information on instructor, Duke Phillips, visit www.ChicoBasinRanch.com.

SEASONAL EVENTS

SPRING

Wild Iris brings a blanket of purple and white on the bison meadows in the spring. Herds of elk, deer and antelope frequent the valley floor while a raging seasonal creek flows onto the north end of the ranch.Hundreds of sand hill cranes fly into the valley on their seasonal migration. As the spring runoff comes down to the valley, we will be receiving about a thousand head of cattle that need to be located on the ranch. This provides for lots of riding as always as well as witnessing the rebirth of the lands productivity.

SUMMER

Summer is our peak season for guests, as we get into the full swing, guests can expect plenty of riding as we doctor and re-locate cattle. Our focus on Horsemanship finds us riding colts, helping guests with their horses, and riding out to enjoy the landscape. Take a look at our online "live at the ranch" journal to get an inside look at our day to day life during the summer and throughout the year.

FALL

At the end of October and early November don’t miss the chance to partake in our yearly Bison roundup. Guests can participate in the corral work and gather; a limited number of very experienced riders may also have the opportunity to partake in the roundup. The golden leaves of fall also bring hundreds of elk back to the valley. This is a wonderful time to ride the country and hear the majestic sights and sounds of bugling elk. The fall cattle gather and shipping is also a highlight of the year, filled with plenty of horseback work and cool peaceful days.
